Charlie Deet's record release show for Fight the Death Funk was another solid display of psychedelic disco magic. And while this night featured more psychedlelia then disco, Deet's always entranching style swayed to a little bit darker side this night. Put off by some computer issues (and maybe the weather) Deet's seemed to drive his demons out on stage, while we all delighted in the sound it was producing. He guzzled "pills" from a humansized pill bottle and cut off a chunck of hair for a fan. On the picture side we took it very easy. We only got a few as we just enjoyed the music. Not wanting to fight the crowd to get up close, we did try to take some up top and off the stairs (promptly getting kicked off) but nothing too special turned out. We did catch up with many of the usual folks like Derrick (Aleks and the Drummer) who dropped some info on the upcoming album and their trip to SXSW, Brandon and Kelsey from Machine Media who always have some good tidbits and a few other stealthy conversations. The funniest bit of the night began as we walked home (fueled by a couple Red Bulls) and passed Kelsey on the street caring a bottle of wine and a 30 of PBR and ended with a kid on a BMX bike near the apartment asking we if I needed any weed. Chicago and it's drug habits - sweet home.
Yesterday we explained why some shows need extra warning this time of year. Here's another.
Record release shows really bring out the best in a band. (and often a bottle of whiskey and an 8-ball) Tonight at the Empty Bottle the Getouts drop their debut, How to Save a Drowning Horse with good friends the Penthouse Sweets (Roots-Pop) and The Outlaw Family Band. (Americana) The Getouts familiar sound ranges from twangy-Blues to crackly-Garage and many points inbetween. Don't be surprised if this album gets some seriously local praise. This is a top-notch triple bill worth a some heavy eyelids tomorrow.
Chicago's Top 10 Albums of the Year (no order)
Also Bon Mots, Backyard Tire Fire, Fetor, Le Concorde, Kurt Elling, Tennis Courts, Arks, Oucho Sparks, Eli Jones, and The Get Outs put out pretty good stuff.
If you were into any facet of indie music in 2004, Le Main Drag by the Bon Mots was an album you most certainly heard or heard someone talking about. The group's debut garnered more ink and college radio play then most band's could wish for in a decade. Spin called the Bon Mots, "one of most promising new bands out there," and the Reader claimed that Le Main Drag was, "a lush, mature, and audacious mix of heady guitar fizz and old-fashioned pop songwriting." From the Sun-Times to USA Today Le Main Drag got stellar marks. Now after almost three years the Bon Mots return with their sophomore release, Forty Days and Forty Nights with the Bon Mots. The band has expanded their sound with more lush harmonies and deeper instrumentation. Take a listen to Emily's Birds and On Her Telephone on their Myspace page and you'll hear the Sixties style pop wadding in atmospheric haze. And while Forty Days and Forty Nights has yet to go on sale you can get an advance copy Friday at the Hideout and see the Bon Mots and Welcome to Ashley for only $8. See the band (and get their album) that everyone will be buzzing about in a few months now.
