A Unique Geographical and Environmental Space
We spend much of our summer on the lakes of Noble, Whitley and Kosciusko counties in Indiana. For both recreation and artistic pursuits we have always found the area a refuge and muse. We often hike, kayak and photograph the area. Last night we were talking with a friend who is studying the aquatic amphibians of the region. We both agree on the uniqueness of the place and one of the primary reason is that it sits atop the St. Lawrence Hydrological Divide. Water on the north side of the divide flows to the Great Lakes and onto the Atlantic and water to the south flows through the Mississippi River Basin to the Gulf of Mexico. Yet despite this high point for water flow the area is full of lakes, ponds, swamps and marshes. No doubt an interesting spot of American naturalism and us as well. It deserves our care.
