More Goodness From Going

When sally broke up last November, it was a sad ending to a group climbing toward their potential. Band founder Charlie Deets is back with his sophomore release, Fight The Death Funk, and his psychedelic disco style continues to be one of the city's best kept secrets. Mixing classic Chicago alternative sounds with robotesque electro styles, Deets is a modern musical maestro. The Pawner's Society (former members of Scotland Yard Gospel Choir) and Music Hall (former members of Arks) open. Tonight at the Sub't - we'll be around snapping photos.

The Baldwin Brothers' 2006 album Return of the Golden Rhodes was easily one of the best local releases of that year. And while their jazzy electro sound is infectious, it's a shame they play and release music so sporadically. The J. Davis Trio (actually a quartet) play horn-infused hip-hop with a soulful jazz feel. Think Roots with a dash more funk. Lastly, the third Chicago band on the bill, Hey Champ, are a rising electro-pop trio. Tonight at Double Door.

Super Furry Animals are one of those bands whose influence is everywhere, but they themselves aren’t as mainstream as many of their followers. Bands like Polyphonic Spree, Secret Machines and Band of Bees all have drawn from SFA’s well of post-alternative offerings, using the group’s power-pop sounds (injected with progressive and electronic undertones) as a springboard. Lately the band's experimental nature has given way to a more direct approach, but expect vintage SFA in the live setting. Times New Viking and Jeffery Lewis open.
